1. An EIA interface standard for serial data transmission by cable (originally designed for use with modems). The transmission of data one bit at a time over a single wire. The RS-232C standard was specifically designed for interfacing data terminal equipment (DTE), such as a printer or computer, with data communications equipment (DCE) such as a data modem.
