Attempting to install a new style hinge for a Canon imageRUNNER 1020 or imageCLASS 6500 series on a new style base frame is not possible without a minor modification.

The issue

A new style document feeder hinge post [FM2-8210-000] will not install correctly in a new style base frame [FL2-3983-010].

The cause

To correct an issue with the original design that allowed the hinge post sleeves to break, Canon released a new version of the hinge post and base frame. The new style hinge comes with a pre-installed spacer to fit the old style base frame. To install the new hinge in a new base frame, the spacer must be removed.

The resolution

Remove the spacer (see instructions).
