If your Canon printer stopped reporting the remaining toner and now shows 100% until the cartridge is empty, Canon has issued a notification you need to be aware of.

For owners of several Canon printer models, the toner level when using certain new genuine Canon toner cartridges shows 100% until empty, when it drops to zero.

This change started February 2022 when Canon began shipping toner cartridges without the chips that tell your printer what the toner level is.

As they explain in their US notification, this is due to challenges in procuring the semiconductor components they need. Rather than have to limit their production and risk leaving you without enough toner, they are shipping the cartridges without the chips. A label on the toner box gives a short description of the problem and a link to Canon’s website.

Leaving out the chips causes two notification issues on your printer:

Per Canon’s notification, continue to use the cartridge like normal until the status changes to 0%, “Empty”, or “None”, then replace the toner as you normally would.
