Why does my Canon MFP printer say my new genuine toner cartridge is malfunctioning or non-Canon?

If your Canon printer suddenly seems to stop recognizing new toner, Canon has issued a notification you need to be aware of.

Errors have begun appearing for owners of several Canon printer models when they replace the toner in their printer. The message says that the toner cartridge “may be malfunctioning or may not be a Canon product” even when using genuine Canon toner cartridges. Depending on the model, the wording may vary.

This message appears because around February 2022, Canon began shipping toner cartridges without the chips that tell your printer that the cartridge you installed is a genuine Canon cartridge. These chips also tell your printer what the toner level is. Canon includes a label on cartridges shipped without chips describing the issue.

As they explain in their US notification, this is due to challenges in procuring the semiconductor components they need. Rather than have to limit their production and risk leaving you without enough toner, they are shipping the cartridges without the chips.
