charge-coupled device
1.  Is abbreviated as CCD. Used in digital copiers. The unit that optically scans the reflected image of the original document and converts it to digital signals for the microprocessor. In a fax machine using conventional lens and mirrors, it is the device which converts the optical image into electrical signals to send to the modem.
