Terms starting with R

R -: An acronym for Reduction ratio.
RADF -: An acronym for Recirculating Automatic Document Feeder. Originals are automatically fed from a stack into the feeder where they recirculate onto the platen, exiting out the feeder (sometimes called an 'inverting' ADF)..
Radiant heat -: A method of fusing toner to paper, wherein heat is used exclusively to melt the toner into the grain of the paper. There are no rollers and no pressure.
RAM -: An acronym for Random Access Memory. The place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor.
Raster -: Computer graphics term which refers to a display image consisting of a matrix or pixels arranged in rows and columns.
Rasteriwd image printing -: See RIP.
RDF -: An acronym for Recirculating document feeder. Reverses each original document, one at a time. Originals are fed back and forth or in and out from the feed tray to the platen and back, returning to the stack in sequence with each cycling.
RDH -: An acronym for Recirculating Document Handler. Originals are fed in a loop from the feed tray to the platen and around back to the stack in sequence with each cycling.
Read only memory -: See ROM.
Real Time Transmission -: When memory is full, you can send documents in real time.
Recall -: Operation key, which when pressed, displays recent information.
Receiver -: The fax machine that information is being sent to.
Recirculating document feeder -: See RDF.
Recirculating Document Handle -: See RDH.
Recond -: Reconditioned as determined by manufacturer.
Recording Paper -: In a fax machine, the supply of paper that incoming faxes will be printed on.
Recovery blade -: Lower drum blade (seal blade) that catches toner removed by drum cleaner blade, so that it does not fall into machine.
Recyclable -: Refers to items that can be reused for their original function, after appropriate steps are taken, presumably by a technician. Does not refer to whether items are biodegradeable or otherwise suitable for conventional disposal.
Recycled paper -: Paper (partially) made from recycled fibre.
Reduc -: Reduction.
Reduced instruction set computing -: See RISC.
Reduction -: Also known as Reduc. The act of decreasing or reducing made less in size or amount or degree.
Reed switch -: A mechanical switch with no visible moving parts. Inside the housing are two filaments. One is iron. When a magnet is brought close to the filament, it moves enough to make or break contact with the other one, thus completing or opening a circuit. T
Refined Printing Command System -: See RPCS.
Registration roller -: See Synchronizing roller.
Registration sensor -: Sensor that notifies the copier that the scan has traveled a certain distance and that secondary feed should begin.
Remaining jobs -: You can check which jobs are waiting in memory and cancel jobs individually.
Remanu -: Remanufactured as determined by manufacturer.
Remanufactured -: A recycled concept by which an existing product can have its useful life extended through a secondary manufacturing.
Remanufacturing -: The process of disassembly and recovery at the module level and, eventually, at the component level.
Remote Terminal Identifier -: See RTI.
Report -: Documents that the copiers, faxes and printers can print out. They are generated internally and can describe and list recent transactions. line conditions, machine settings, etc.
Resident fonts -: Typefaces and font sizes that are included with printer.
Resist roller -: Another name for registration roller. A roller, sometimes in a document feeder, that paper arrives at after initial feed.
Resolution -: Resolution is the number of individual points of color, or pixels, contained on a display monitor, expressed in terms of the number of pixels on the horizontal axis and the number on the vertical axis.
Resolution enhancement technology -: See RET.
RET -: An acronym for Resolution enhancement technology. Method of improving output resolution.
Ribbon -: In this context, refers to the black film that thermal transfer fax machines use to transfer the image to the recording paper.
RIE ratio calculation function -: User can input original size and desired copy size via keypad; the copier then calculates the correct reduction or enlargement percentage.
RIP -: An acronym for Rasteriwd image printing. Digital printing system technology in which originals are rasterized via Raster Image Processing (sometimes referred to as ripping).
Rip & Print -: Digital printing system technology in which each original is ripped (rasterized) then printed out immediately, regardless of the number of originals. E.g. system rips 1st original I prints 1st original while ripping 2nd original I printing 2nd original while ripping :1rd original I etc.
RISC -: An acronym for Reduced instruction set computing. Description of certain CPUs.
RJ-11 -: Standard modular 4-wire phone jack used with most faxes.
RJ45 -: 8-wire phone connector.
RO/PM -: Rip Once I Print Multiple. Digital printing system technology which rips (rasterizes) one or a set of originals just once, regardless of the number of prints or sets requested.
ROM -: Read only memory.
Rotary -: Pulse. Dialing in non-touch tone system. Noticeable faint ratcheting/clicking sounds for each key, as opposed to the audible differing tones.
Rotate -: Image is rotated automatically in memory, so that it will be placed on the paper in the correct orientation, even if the original document and copy paper are not of the same orientation. This may also be used to complete a job if the machine runs out of paper but has the same size loaded in the opposite orientation. Generally used only for letter size paper.
Rotate image -: Same definition as rotate.
Rotate sort -: Also known as criss/cross or alternate sort. If sorting is desired and two different orientations of the same paper are loaded (8 1/2 z x 11 and 11 lx8 1/2) the paper will be fed from both of these paper sources so that each set of collated copies is complete and stacked 90 degrees from the one below or above it.
RPCS -: An acronym for Refined Printing Command System. A set of commands used to communicate with printers. This printer language, developed by Ricoh is a Windows-optimized printer data language.
RS232 -: Connector for interfacing to computer.
RSADF -: An acronym for Recirculating Semi-Automatic Document Feeder. Originals are manually fed into the feeder where they recirculate onto the platen, exiting out the feeder.
RSPF -: An acronym for Reversing Single Pass Feeder. Duplexing document feeder.
rt -: An acronym for Right.
RTI -: An acronym for Remote Terminal Identifier. (Called fax's phone number.)
RX -: Receive, used on the Journal printed from a fax machine to identify documents received by the machine.
