This document provides instructions for the installation of a feed tire and separation pad for the models referenced above. Included in your Brother MFC-7420 paper feeding kit (PR# E0823) is one pickup roller assembly [LM4300001] and one separation pad [LM4143001] and spring [LM4146001].
These instructions also apply to Brother models DCP-7010 and DCP-7025
Prior to Installation
Turn the power off and unplug the power cord from the printer.
Removing the left side cover
Remove the paper from the paper tray and pull the paper tray out.
Open the front cover and remove the drum/toner assembly.
Remove the two bind screws; the first one is located in the front of the printer. Note: You will need to have the front cover open and the paper tray pulled out in order to remove it. The second bind screw is located in the back of the printer. Open the rear door to locate the screw and remove it.
Turn the printer on its left side. Two hooks, one on the printer’s front side, and one on the back, hold the left side cover on. Gently pry (with your hands) the back side cover to release the back side hook.
Gently pry (using your hands) the top cover downwards until it starts to release.
Gently pry (using your hands) the front side cover to release the front side hook.
Remove the left side cover.
Gently pry (with a small standard screwdriver) the left side cover away from the top of the seam. Note: In the front there are two hooks keeping the left side cover on. Use a small standard screwdriver to gently pry the hooks off.
Remove the left side cover.
Removing the pickup roller holder assembly
Remove the spring from the pickup roller gear and set it aside.
Remove the pickup roller gear by pulling it straight out. (Use a standard screwdriver to slide it off).
Remove the left pickup roller bushing by using needle nose pliers. Gently twist the bushing until it unlocks from the frame.
Turn the printer on its right side to access the chute base plate. Remove the six screws that hold the plate into place.
Remove the chute base plate by lifting it out of the printer.
Remove the pickup roller shaft by lifting it from the left frame and pulling it out.
Remove the pickup roller holder assembly by gently lifting it away from the machine. Note: When removing the pickup roller holder assembly, the pickup roller spring may dislodge and fall – pay close attention not to lose the spring. The spring will be used again to reinstall the pickup roller holder assembly.
Installing the pickup roller holder assembly
Take the new pickup roller assembly and attach the pickup roller spring to the assembly holder (which is a small protrusion for the spring to slide on).
Install the new pickup roller assembly to the empty slot you removed it from. Slide the assembly into the collar on the bottom of the frame. Ensure that the hook is attached to the white link lever.
Install the pickup roller shaft by sliding into the empty slot that it was originally removed from.
Install the chute base plate to the empty slot that it was originally removed from.
Install the six screws that hold the plate into place.
Install the left pickup roller bushing to the pickup roller shaft. The bushing will twist into place and will lock it to the frame.
Install the pickup roller gear into the empty slot it was originally removed from and reattach the spring to the pickup roller gear.
Installing the left side cover
Reinstall the left side cover into the empty slot it was removed from. Note: Make sure that the two hooks snap into place to secure the left side cover.
Install the screw located in the back of the printer and close the rear door.
Install the second screw located in the front of the printer.
Reinstall the drum/toner assembly into the empty slot you removed it from.
Close the front door.
Removing the separation pad
With the paper tray out of the printer, locate the separation pad assembly directly in the middle of the paper tray. On each side of the pad assembly there are two small gaps. Slide a flat head screwdriver into the right or left side of the gap on the separation pad. Gently pry to release the separation pad assembly from the separation pad holder.
Remove the old separation pad assembly and separation pad spring. Note: When removing the old separation pad assembly, the spring may dislodge and fall – pay close attention not to lose the spring. The spring will be used to reinstall the separation pad.
Installing the separation pad
Take the new separation pad assembly and attach the spring to the assembly holder (which is a small protrusion for the spring to slide on).
Install the new separation pad into the empty slot that it was originally removed from by gently sliding it into until it snaps into place.
Load paper into the paper tray and reinstall the paper tray into the empty slot that it was originally removed from.
