About US State Sales Tax
With recent legal changes, most retailers need to charge sales tax in most states, even those selling on the Internet.
Common questions about sales tax:
-
Does my order qualify for sales tax?
Most orders require sales tax, but there are a few exceptions.
These types of orders do not require sales tax:
- Orders shipping to Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon
- Products ordered for resale, when tax will be collected and submitted by you
- Orders purchased by qualified federal government agencies
-
How is tax calculated?
Sales tax is determined based on the destination state, county and city. For cases where sales tax would not apply, such as purchases intended for resale, please see the section regarding exemptions.
-
What is a resale sales tax exemption?
A resale sales tax exemption is used when a company purchases products for resale in a state where sales tax is charged. It allows products to be purchased without paying sales tax. However, this requires a reseller exemption certificate in either your home state or destination state(s). The destination state also generally requires you to charge the end recipient sales tax and remit it to the state.
For example, if a seller in Colorado wanted to make a purchase for resale in California, the seller would need a resale certificate in California and would submit a signed exemption certificate to us with that reseller number included. Then, orders placed with us and shipping to California for resale would not be charged sales tax.
