Memorial Day is quickly approaching! Americans celebrate Memorial Day to honor men and women who have lost their lives in military service. After the American civil war people would decorate their loved one’s graves with flowers in the spring in remembrance of them. During this time it was called Decoration Day. In 1967, it was recognized as a federal holiday called Memorial Day to be celebrated on the last Monday in May; there is no school and many businesses are closed. The long weekend often is celebrated with BBQ’s as the weather is getting warmer and summer vacation is near.
There are a lot of educational videos you can share with your kids about Memorial Day. Check out the short video History of Memorial Day for Kids for a great overview of the holiday for young ones. A read aloud book is available on YouTube called Rolling Thunder. This book is told from the child’s perspective when he attends the annual Memorial Day celebration in Washington D.C. with his grandfather.
